Importing a Car to Spain: Download Your Customs Clearance Authorization Template (Area)
If you are relocating to Spain or importing a vehicle from outside the EU, you will inevitably encounter the Spanish Customs (Aduanas) bureaucracy. To represent you before the Tax Agency (Agencia Tributaria), your customs broker or freight forwarder requires a specific legal document. This template provides the formal authorization needed to clear your vehicle through customs in the Area region, ensuring your import process moves forward without unnecessary administrative delays.
How and Where to Submit Your Authorization in Area
In the Area region, the customs clearance process is primarily handled electronically through the AEAT (Agencia Tributaria) portal. However, your chosen customs representative will need you to sign this document to gain the legal authority to act on your behalf.
- Step 1: Complete the template below with your personal details and the vehicle's VIN (Chassis number).
- Step 2: Sign the document (a digital signature via "Certificado Digital" or "Cl@ve" is preferred, though a handwritten signature is often accepted if scanned).
- Step 3: Send the signed document to your customs agent or forwarder. They will upload it to the "Ventanilla Única Aduanera" (VUA) system.
- Step 4: Once the agent has the authorization, they will file the DUA (Documento Único Administrativo) to pay the relevant import duties and VAT (IVA).

Additional Documentation Required
Beyond this authorization letter, the Spanish Customs authorities in Area will require a comprehensive dossier to process your vehicle. Ensure you have the following ready:
- Proof of Ownership: The original vehicle registration document (Title/Logbook) from the country of origin.
- Bill of Sale or Invoice: To prove the value of the vehicle for tax assessment purposes.
- Identification: A copy of your NIE/DNI or Passport.
- Technical Specifications: The vehicle's technical sheet (Ficha Técnica), if available.
- Proof of Residence Transfer (if applicable): If you are moving to Spain, providing a "Certificado de Empadronamiento" can sometimes help in claiming exemptions from import duties under the "transfer of residence" rule.
Expert Tip: Always keep a digital copy of your signed authorization and the DUA (the document generated after payment). You will need these documents later when you go to the DGT (Dirección General de Tráfico) to obtain your final Spanish license plates. Never attempt to drive the car on Spanish roads until the customs clearance is fully finalized and the vehicle is registered, as this can lead to heavy fines and vehicle impoundment.
