How to Notify the Cuenca Town Hall of a Vehicle Sale: Downloadable Template
When you sell a vehicle in Spain, it is not enough to just notify the DGT (Traffic Department). To avoid future tax liabilities, such as the IVTM (Impuesto sobre Vehículos de Tracción Mecánica), you must formally notify the local Town Hall (Ayuntamiento) of your municipality. This document serves as a formal declaration that you are no longer the owner, ensuring that subsequent road tax bills are issued to the new owner.
How and Where to Submit Your Notification in Cuenca
In Cuenca, you should submit this notification as soon as the transfer of ownership is finalized at the DGT. You have two main options to submit your documentation:
- In-person: Visit the Registro General del Ayuntamiento de Cuenca (located at Plaza Mayor, 1). It is highly recommended to book an appointment (cita previa) through the official municipal website before arriving.
- Online: If you possess a digital certificate (Certificado Digital) or Cl@ve PIN, you can submit the document via the Sede Electrónica of the Cuenca Town Hall. This is the fastest and most efficient method.

Additional Documentation Required
To ensure your request is processed without delays, you must attach the following documents to the template above:
- A copy of the new Permiso de Circulación (Vehicle Registration Certificate) showing the new owner’s details.
- A copy of your DNI, NIE, or Passport.
- A copy of the Contract of Sale (Contrato de Compraventa), if available.
- If you are acting through a representative, a signed authorization document (autorización de representación) will be required.
Expert Tip: Always keep a copy of the notification stamped by the Town Hall (or the digital receipt if submitted online). This "sell-stamp" is your only legal protection if the Town Hall mistakenly sends you a road tax bill for the following year. If you receive a tax bill after selling, do not ignore it; present your stamped notification immediately at the tax office to request an annulment of the debt.
