How to Buy or Sell a Used Car in Tui: Downloadable Private Purchase Contract Template
Buying or selling a vehicle between private individuals in Spain can be a daunting process due to the strict administrative requirements. This document, known as a Contrato de Compraventa de Vehículo entre Particulares, is a legally binding private agreement that protects both the buyer and the seller by documenting the transfer of ownership, the vehicle's condition, and the agreed price. Using this template is essential to avoid future legal disputes regarding hidden defects or outstanding traffic fines.
Instructions on how and where to submit your paperwork in Tui
Once both parties have signed the contract, the process is not yet complete. You must finalize the transfer of ownership (cambio de titularidad) with the Spanish authorities. In Tui, you have several options:
- DGT (Dirección General de Tráfico): While the Jefatura Provincial de Tráfico is located in Pontevedra, you can initiate the process online via the DGT "Sede Electrónica" using a digital certificate or Cl@ve.
- Gestoría: Most residents in Tui choose to use a local gestoría (administrative agency). They handle the DGT paperwork and the payment of the ITP (Impuesto de Transmisiones Patrimoniales) for a small fee, ensuring the transfer is processed correctly.
- Tax Office (Axencia Tributaria de Galicia): You must pay the ITP (Model 620). This is a regional tax that must be settled before the DGT will finalize the transfer of the vehicle into the new owner's name.

Additional documentation required
To ensure the transaction is fully recognized by the Spanish government, ensure you have the following documents ready:
- Original and copy of the DNI/NIE of both parties.
- Original "Permiso de Circulación" (Vehicle Registration Certificate).
- Proof of payment of the ITP (Model 620).
- The signed "Contrato de Compraventa" provided above.
- Proof that the "Impuesto de Vehículos de Tracción Mecánica" (IVTM) for the previous year has been paid in the Tui Municipality.
Expert Tip: Always verify the vehicle's status by requesting a "Informe de Vehículo" from the DGT website before signing any contract. This report costs a small fee but will tell you if the car has any "cargas" (liens), embargoes, or pending fines that could prevent the transfer of ownership. Do not hand over the keys until you have verified the payment and have both signatures on the contract.
