Buying or selling a second-hand car between private individuals in Spain can be a straightforward process, provided you have the right paperwork in place. If you are transacting in Abavides or anywhere else in the Spanish territory, a legally sound Private Vehicle Sales Contract (known in Spanish as a Contrato de Compraventa de Vehículo entre Particulares) is your best tool to protect both parties. This document legally transfers ownership, details the condition of the vehicle at the time of sale, and serves as definitive proof of the transaction date and price for tax purposes.
Instructions on how and where to process it in Abavides
Once you and the other party have signed the contract, you cannot simply hand over the keys and walk away; Spanish bureaucracy requires specific administrative steps to complete the transfer of ownership (known as the cambio de titularidad):
- Sign the Contract: Both the buyer and the seller must sign and date the contract. Make sure to include the exact minute the sale takes place to protect the seller from any speeding or parking fines incurred after the handover.
- Pay the Impuesto de Transmisiones Patrimoniales (ITP): Before registering the vehicle change, the buyer must pay the property transfer tax (Modelo 620 or 621, depending on the autonomous community). For residents dealing with transactions in Abavides (Ourense, Galicia), this is processed through the Xunta de Galicia.
- DGT Appointment: Book an appointment at your nearest Provincial Traffic Headquarters (Jefatura Provincial de Tráfico)—in this case, Ourense—or complete the procedure online via the DGT electronic office (Sede Electrónica) using a digital certificate or Cl@ve.
- Submit Documentation: Present the signed contract, your DGT application form, the vehicle's ITV (technical inspection) card, and proof of tax payment to officially update the Spanish vehicle registry.

- Vehicle Documents: The original Permiso de Circulación (Circulation Permit) and the Tarjeta de Inspección Técnica (ITV card, including the recent favorable inspection sticker/sheet).
- Road Tax Proof: Receipt showing payment of the local municipal tax (IVTM) corresponding to the previous year for the municipality where the car was registered.
- Official DGT Forms: The official application form for change of ownership (Solicitud de Transmisión de Vehículos), duly filled out and signed by both parties.
Closing expert tips
As a traffic and legal consultant in Spain, my top recommendation is never to hand over the vehicle keys without a signed contract that clearly states the exact hour and minute of the transaction. This simple precaution ensures that if the new owner commits a traffic violation or gets caught by a speed camera on their drive home from Abavides, the timestamp protects the seller from liability. Furthermore, remember that the buyer has a legal obligation to provide the seller with a copy of the new Circulation Permit showing the updated ownership details within a maximum period of 30 days from the sale date.
